Privacy notice

Your inbox is not our product.

This notice explains what Terse accesses, where information goes, and the controls available to you. Terse is a local-first macOS email client; it is not a hosted mailbox service.

Contact privacy

In brief

  • Your email provider remains the source of your mailbox. Terse runs on your Mac.
  • Mail indexes, preferences, and application data are stored locally. OAuth refresh tokens are stored in macOS Keychain.
  • When you enable an AI feature, only the content relevant to that task is sent to the AI provider you configured.
  • We do not sell your personal information, use Gmail data for advertising, or train Terse models on your content.
  • AI and browser agents may prepare drafts but cannot activate Send or Schedule. The ordinary authorization to send stays with you.

Information Terse handles

Google account and Gmail data

If you connect Gmail, Terse receives your Google account identity and the authorization needed for the features you choose. Terse may access message headers, bodies, attachments, threads, labels, drafts, and mailbox state so it can display, search, organize, and act on your email.

Local application data

Terse stores application settings, account references, mail indexes, local classifications, tasks, review state, prepared drafts, action receipts, and other working data in private files and databases on your Mac. Complete message content and attachments may also be cached locally when needed to provide the reader and requested features.

Credentials

Google OAuth refresh tokens are stored in your macOS login Keychain. They are not stored in Terse databases, browser storage, this website, or our public hosting. Short-lived access tokens are used to communicate with Google over encrypted HTTPS connections.

Support communications

If you email us, we receive the address, content, and attachments you choose to send. Do not include passwords, OAuth tokens, or unnecessary private message content in a support request.

This website

This static website uses no analytics, advertising pixels, cookies, external fonts, or contact forms. Cloudflare delivers the site and may process standard network and request information for delivery, reliability, and security under its own terms.

How Google data is used

Terse requests only the Google scopes needed for its Gmail features:

  • openid and email identify the Google account you connect and ensure actions are routed to that exact account.
  • gmail.modify lets Terse read and display Gmail, synchronize threads and labels, search and classify messages, and carry out actions you choose such as read/unread, star, archive, move, label, spam, or trash operations.
  • gmail.send, when enabled for your version, lets Terse hand a reviewed message to Gmail only after you explicitly activate the human Send or Schedule control.

Terse’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Google user data is used only to provide or improve user-facing email features that are prominent in Terse. It is not transferred for advertising, sold, used to determine creditworthiness, or used to train generalized Terse AI or machine-learning models.

Optional AI processing

Terse supports AI-assisted features such as classification, search, summarization, drafting, and document work. These features are optional. When you invoke one, a bounded prompt containing the message content, attachment text, metadata, or local context relevant to the selected task may be sent to the AI provider you configured.

The AI provider processes that information under your relationship with that provider and its applicable terms, privacy controls, and retention settings. Terse does not silently choose a second AI provider, use your mailbox to train a Terse model, or treat an AI response as authority to send email.

Sharing and transfers

Terse does not sell personal information. Information is transferred only where needed for a feature you use:

  • to Google or another mail provider to retrieve mail and perform your requested mailbox actions;
  • to the AI provider you configure when you invoke an AI feature;
  • to Cloudflare to deliver and protect this public website and route email sent to our public support address; or
  • when required by applicable law or necessary to protect users, the service, or the public.

Retention and deletion

Local Terse data remains on your Mac until you remove it, clear the relevant feature data, or uninstall and delete the application data. OAuth credentials remain in macOS Keychain until you disconnect the account or remove the Keychain item. Provider-side mail remains subject to the provider’s retention settings.

Support email is retained only as long as reasonably needed to answer the request, keep necessary security or operational records, and meet legal obligations. This public website does not maintain a Terse user database.

Your choices

  1. Disconnect in Terse. Remove a connected Gmail account in the application’s account settings.
  2. Revoke at Google. Visit Google Account permissions and remove Terse’s access.
  3. Delete local data. Remove Terse’s local application data and related Keychain credentials from your Mac. Contact us if you need guidance for your version.
  4. Control AI features. Do not enable or invoke AI features, or disconnect the configured AI provider.
  5. Ask for help. Email support@terse.email with a privacy, access, correction, or deletion question.

Revoking Google access stops future API access but does not itself delete email held by Google or local files already stored on your Mac.

Security and human control

Terse uses encrypted provider connections, macOS Keychain for OAuth refresh tokens, bounded local storage, signed message references, and readback checks for mailbox actions. No system is perfectly secure, but Terse is designed to minimize remote storage and reduce access to what a chosen feature needs.

AI-authored content is draft material. Terse’s agents, browser automation, and AI tools cannot activate Send or Schedule or call an equivalent outbound provider action. Only a human operating the product’s reviewed controls provides the ordinary authorization to send.

For vulnerability reports, see our security page.

Children and changes

Terse is a productivity tool and is not directed to children under 13. We may update this notice as the product or legal requirements change. Material changes will be reflected by a new date on this page.
